What's in Grover Norquist’s Private Files?

Thanks to Helen Gandy, the world never learned of the true reach of J. Edgar Hoover’s choke-hold on American politicians. According to a congressional inquiry and other sources, the notorious FBI director amassed secret files on the sexual and other peccadillos of politicians, entertainers, writers and officials, giving him immense blackmailing powers over his real and imagined enemies on Capitol Hill and elsewhere.

We'll never really know the whole story, because Miss Gandy, his longtime secretary, destroyed the files upon Hoover's death in May 1972.

It may turn out that tax maniac Grover Norquist also has his own Miss Gandy, primed to destroy the contents of his locked safe when the grim reaper comes. Until then, he's got the Republicans' cajones in his hands.

Norquist himself suggested his true grasp on power Monday night when he "took a pot shot at Rep. Peter King’s (R-NY) marriage,"  according to Raw Story's Arturo Garcia, after the Long Islander suggested he might abandon his no-taxes pledge after nearly two decades.

"I hope his wife understands that commitments last a little longer than two years or something,” Norquist fumed.

What other than the possession of embarrassing details on the private lives and messy business deals of Republican legislators can explain the right-wing lobbyist’s hammerlock on tax policy over the past quarter century?

Tiffanygate: Elite Jeweler Responds to Gingrich Questions

Tiffany & Co. issued a statement late Tuesday afternoon, saying that Newt Gingrich’s "Tiffany Time Account has a zero balance and that all payments were made in a timely manner.”

The Washington Post's Glenn Kessler questioned the statement.

“The financial disclosure forms list the Tiffany liability as a ‘revolving charge account,’ not a ‘charge account.’ …The Gingriches clearly had a revolving credit card with Tiffany, or else they would not have qualified for the Tiffany Time Account. (A revolving account is one in which the customer can carry a balance.)

“The disclosure forms required Gingrich’s wife to report the balance of revolving charge accounts that exceeded $10,000 at the close of the calendar year," Kessler continued. "That suggests that the Tiffany balance was paid in full one year — i.e., within 12 months — but then Gingrich and his wife ran up another $250,000 to $500,000 the next year. Only two years of reports were filed.”

In a meeting with reports Monday afternoon, Gingrich expressed puzzlement by the media interest in his bling binge, Kessler reported.

American Diplomats Tend to Become Saudi Lobbyists -- but Maybe Not for Much Longer

Back in August 2002, a congressional delegation was traveling around Saudi Arabia, home to 15 of the 19 al Qaeda hijackers who less than a year earlier had launched the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.
